After Submission Thoughts
After Submission I had a lot going on in my mind, so I use the GameJam Questions to awnser the for my self and share it with you all.
- What did you want to learn going into the jam?
- Was this your first time coding?
It was my 3. Time Coding in 3D and First time on my own without a complet course. So I had to figure out a lot my self and just used Tutorials when I didn t get the right solution. - Was this the first time you made a TowerDefense?
Yes it was the First Time I did a Tower Defense, I wanted to make this classic sometime soon but didn t get my head around to do so. It is very simple to get things done in this genre I guess and you ahve a lot of oportunity to add in on the Basic of this genre. - Was this your first attempt at pixel art?
No I am doing Pixelart for at least 2 years now. But I never used a render texture to pixelate a 3D Game - that was a lot of fun and the result is way cooler then I expected.
- Was this your first time coding?
- What did you ACTUALLY learn?
- I never worked with Texture Renders in this was. That was very interessting and I got a good feel for it to use them again.
- I noticed that writing clean code, and use Setter Functions and getter Functions make the Debugging and Balancing much easier.
- After some Gametesting I noticed that there are a lot of little things that make a game more palyable - like Notification Sounds,
Landmarks, Visual Prompts. Many of those are clear to me while making the Game but other people don t know what to do about.
- How did you grow during the jam?
I feel much more confident in making 3D Games.
- What resources did you use to learn during the jam? Were there any good guides, video tutorials, or people that helped you?
A friend of mine who is a professional GameDev sometimes looks over my code when I have some serious questions. I had an issue where a Destroy(Object) didn t work. and I didn t notice that I destroyed the Transform (which is not the GameObject) and got a null ref error... that was not clear to me but when he Rubberducked the code if was fixed in mere seconds.
I used a Tutorial from Unity School to get the LineRender working as intendet. Was very short, clear and precise! Love those Tutorials.
I also used Brakeys Tower Defens tutorial but only for the Wavespawner (help) and the Turrets (complete) because I had no clue how to do those. And although his tutorials may not be the industry standard, they are very clear and easy to follow.
- What was the most challenging part of the jam?
Getting frustrated because I didn't recognize the "Limitation" of Pixelart, and dropping out of it - then getting back and learn something complete new - was challanging, but it worked very fast, easy and I had no Problem on the End.
- What was the most interesting part of the jam?
To create a Devlog with a Tutorial in mind - I did once a "Tutorial Stream HOW TO MAKE YOUR FIRST GAME" - and that was very intense - but to make a Game in Limited Time and the write down what I learnd and get the hang of it was very interesting and fun!
- If you could do it again, what would you do differently?
I would lay out the Code more properly. I did some overscoping with the classes, resources etc. that made it much more complicated.
I would let other people playtest more and get some more input into it so I see what the issues are and what people need to get the Game in the fun and playable direction. In the End I think I got that right but that depends on what you like to play or not I guess.
I realy appriciate this GameJam and hope there will be another in the future, I had a blast and powerd this Game through in 4 days and I love the result my self! Thanks to Captain Coder and his Team for making this possible,
